Inside N Outside
(Acrylics, Mixed Medium, Oil: 5 canvases 10x10)
InsidenOutside

I heard an old chestnut of a saying. It was a saying that was constantly bandied about, “think outside the box”. Other versions of the old chestnut were “thinking outside the box” and “thinking out of the box” as well as “thinking beyond the box”. As I reflected on the worn out saying, and the various versions, my mind’s eye began to paint what I saw as my mind jumped from one version to the other. I quickly sketched what I saw as I dwelled on each version and in my mind it ended up as a collage because although similar they resulted in different views in my mind. The saying used to drive me bonkers because it came from nearly everyone’s mouth about any job, project, process, procedure and so forth. When I hear it today, it’s like fingernails on a chalk board. After I had completed the paintings, I realized that each panel of the collage could stand on its own when thinking of any part of the old chestnut. I also noticed that they could be displayed in any configuration. I chose the cross configuration because hearing the saying used to make me one cross individual and to some extent still does to this day.
